Success in poker (like anything else in life) requires a lot of dedication, discipline, hard work and most importantly - time and money. Generally, the more you invest into anything in life the more you will get out of it in return. Successful people weren’t born all knowing in their respected fields and dominate from the beginning. There learned the hard knock lessons through trial and error. Most importantly they learned how to lose.
For the most part, self made successful people will lose/fail a whole bunch before they learn how to win. Once you know what its like to actually lose money do you understand how to win money. For example - Its like when you are a little kid. When you are younger and you do something bad you are punished. However, how often do little kids learn after the first time? Hardly ever! They are bad over and over and over again and little by little they learn life lessons with respect to right and wrong. This analogy can be used with all kinds of different scenarios / learning from past relationships / business ideas / trouble with the law / etc.
Unfortunately, some people don’t learn quite as easily as others. Well poker is no different. I think the earlier you face defeat and you lose money will you will truly understand what its like and what it will take to win money. Once you learn the hard knocks of poker will you be able to mold your poker alter ego into a winning machine.
So therefore, don’t assume after doing a little research on poker strategy / reading a couple of websites / poker books that you will be able to conquer the poker world. It takes time and dedication to be successful over the grand scheme of things. The amount of time that it will take completely depends on you and how much you are willing to invest.
IMPORTANT POKER RULE:
When you practice poker you practice poker - no distractions-
if you want to be successful you need to give the game complete concentration. No worrying about the kids / the job / or anything else. Also, if you are serious about winning than absolutely no drinking / drugs. How are you able to analyze the table / calculate math and make correct bets when you have all of these distractions? The answer is you CANT. I don’t care if you have won before or you think you play better when you are drunk but the truth is you don’t. Its like when people say “i drive better when im drunk because i concentrate more”. That saying is completely ridiculous and ignorant. If you want to be successful than you need to have unwavering concentration and dedication to what you are doing. When you are at the table you are at work! You are using a combination of fear and deception to outwit your opponent. You need to be on your game to win!
